Why Vladimir Menshov removed "Moscow does not believe in tears"
The appearance on the screens of the whole world of the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” is due to the usual alarm clock. Remember, these were in almost every Soviet family? It was the idea of Katerina’s dream, which is 20 years old, where she falls asleep, setting an alarm clock, and wakes up in a completely different series in the next series, attracted Vladimir Menshov.
By the time of the start of filming of the legendary saga about Moscow, the director Vladimir Menshov had only one, though quite successful, film “The Rally”.
A curious fact: when the heroes of Alentova and Batalov turn on the TV before Alexandra’s arrival, the “grid” on the screen is accompanied by a waltz from the movie “The Draw” - Vladimir Menshov’s previous directorial work. A similar technique is used in the next film by Menchov's “Love and Pigeons”, where a fragment from the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” is shown on TV, and further, in the film “Envy of the Gods”, where the characters watch the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” .
Scenario for the future Oscar-winning film writer Valentin Chernykh wrote in the framework of the competition of scenarios about Moscow. The story of three friends who came to conquer Moscow from the province, the writer came up with in just 19 days. He was in a hurry because he didn’t meet the deadlines agreed upon by the terms of the competition. And at the stage of conception the work was called “Twice False”. And behind the images of the main characters hid real people. Valentin Chernykh himself later said: “Lyudmila, Alexandra, Katerina are all my mother's aunts. And the characters are very similar. "
Almost immediately, the script was purchased by Mosfilm Studios. The wife of Valentina Chernykh Lyudmila suggested that Vladimir Menshov be the director.
At first, Vladimir Menshov wanted to give up on the film, but he was interested in the original scenario, which became the logical and plot divider of the film into two series-parts: the main character falls asleep to a young girl with an unsettled fate, and wakes up from an alarm clock by an already mature and successful woman.
But except for a temporary jump with an alarm clock, and even a scam with a professorial apartment in the script, the young director did not like almost anything. The director's friends didn’t like it either, most advised not to make this film - the plot was considered not fashionable. And even her own wife, the future performer of the main role in the film, after reading it, said: "Well, Mura!".
Before starting the shooting, Vladimir Menshov suggested Valentine Chernykh to make several (“in the amount of 44”) changes in the scenario. But the playwright, agreeing on the need for amendments, refused to continue to work on the literary basis of the picture. And Menshov, who was so keen on the idea of the alarm clock, took up the business himself. Within one and a half years he rewrote, searched - as a result, the script grew to two episodes.
Much has been changed - from the drunken hockey player Gurin to the profession of Gosha (according to the scenario, he was not a “mechanic-intellectual” but an electric welder at a construction site). As a result, the script has increased by one third. And we got a film that millions of viewers still enjoy watching.
