What does the example of Job of Pochaev teach us?

The Monk Job of Pochaev is one of the most revered saints in the Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox churches. Over 350 years have passed since his death. But time cannot weaken the spiritual bond that is firmly established between him and the believers. November 10, the day of the memory of the monk, the editors of our column recalls the life and wonders of the beloved saint.

Job Pochaevsky - icon

Gone to the monastery ... at 10 years

The Monk Job of Pochaev was born about 1551 in Western Ukraine, in the territory of Galicia. Today it is the village of Uhornyk in the Kolomyya district of Ivano-Frankivsk region His parents were deeply religious, they called their son Ivan - in memory of John the Forerunner.

When the boy was only 10 years old, he secretly left home in the Ugornitsky monastery. We have not heard the stories that the parents were looking for a son, and the abbot of the monastery did not allow the boy without the consent of his father and mother. On the contrary: everyone saw the will of God in what had happened, and the igumen was able to see the future ascetic in Ivan.

Two years later, the boy was shorn in monks with the name Job, in memory of the Old Testament righteous man, Job the Long-suffering.

For a modern person, it seems very strange how a 12-year-old boy can be a “real monk”. But precisely such, not for years spiritually adult, was Job Pochaev.

Monks with the Icon of Job of Pochaev

At the age of 30, he was tonsured into the great schema. The shims, in a sense, are the highest degree of monasticism. Those who accept the schema are exempt from all obedience, except in the ministry of liturgy and spiritualism. Schimonahs live alone and devote their time to prayer. The monk lived 70 years in such a spiritual feat.

It is also interesting that during the vow he was given the name John again in his schema, but he entered the church calendar exactly as Job.

Dubno monastery and the test of faith

It was a difficult time for the Orthodox Church, due to the difficult political situation, Western Ukraine was increasingly drawn into the union. In 1596, the Greek-Catholic Church emerged as a compromise variant, preserving the Orthodox rite, but accepting the main Catholic dogmas and submitting to the Pope of Rome.

Even when many intelligent people of that time accepted Uniatism, Job of Pochaev firmly defended Orthodoxy. Even his last name indicated his firmness -Iron.

Since 1580, at the numerous requests of Prince Constantin of Ostrog, the monk goes to the Dubno Holy Monastery.

Pochaev saints

Here, through their common efforts - the prince and monk - a circle of spiritual enlightenment and firm standing in Orthodoxy is formed. Job supports educational activities. With his blessing in 1581, Ivan Fedorov publishes the Ostrog Bible, through the efforts of the monk at the monastery, translate the works of the Fathers of the Church.

In a short time, Job became a famous person:

  • about him spread the glory of a monk, an ascetic and enlightener;
  • due to his enlightenment activities, dissatisfaction is growing with those who have accepted Catholicism or a more compromise union.

In this situation, Job of Pochaev makes the decision to retire somewhere near the Pochaev Mountain. But he did not succeed in completely secluded. After some time he was found by the Pochayev monks and invited to become their hegumen.

Hegumen of Pochayev

During the reign of Job, a communal charter was established at the monastery, a Holy Trinity Cathedral and six temples were erected. The abbot did not forget about enlightenment, as well as about his schimnichnyh vows.

Many sources indicate that in 1626 the monk created a printing house at the monastery, also wrote a fair number of works in defense of the Orthodox faith. He was the author of the “Book of Job Iron, Hegumen of Pochaev, written with the power of his hand”. Labor came out after almost 200 years under a different name (“Pochayevskaya Bee”).

St. Job's Cave

Almost all his time, Job Pochaev spent in solitude. Today, everyone who came to the Pochaev Lavra can see the cave of the Venerable. Some pilgrims are even afraid to climb there: it is cramped, humid and uncomfortable. But it didn’t scare St. Job at all: he had been kneeling for hours on end and praying. According to his biographer, the monk Dionysius, the saint’s legs ached from this and were covered with bloody wounds. But the pain did not stop the ascetic.

Divine Light

One of the disciples of the saint saw how the body of the monk shone with an unearthly light. Thus, in his time, Seraphim of Sarov was illuminated before Motovilov. So shone Sergius of Radonezh after meeting with the Virgin. So, probably, Christ shone on the day of transfiguration. It is an unearthly light, and we are all called to it. Job Pochaevsky awarded him already on the ground.

Uncorrupted relics

The body of the saint, whom God's grace touched, even remained uncorrupted after death. A saint died in 1651, at the age of 100 years. Neither permanent fasting, nor bloody scabs on his legs, nor scanty food undermined his physical and mental health. The test of time did not affect his imperishable power. After all, holiness is not subject to earthly laws.

Wonders of Job Pochaevsky

Miraculous phenomena accompanied the monk both during his life and after death.

"... By you the Lord wants to open my bones"

Eight years after the death of the monk, his miraculous relics were found. This event was preceded by the appearance of the Holy Metropolitan of Kiev, Dionysius. In a dream, the Pochayev's hegumen addressed the Metropolitan: “... With you, the Lord wants to open my bones.”

Procession with relics

Metropolitan Dionysius, as befits a believer, did not immediately believe in dreams, because according to church teaching, most dreams come from the evil one. But Job Pochaevsky appeared both a second and a third time. Only after that the Kiev Metropolitan went to Pochaev and ordered to open the coffin with the remains of the saint. The relics lay incorruptible, from them came a wonderful fragrance.

Appearance of the Virgin and the Monk Job

In 1675, when the Turks surrounded the Pochaev monastery, the monks prayed all night before the miraculous Pochaev icon. We already wrote about it in the article "". In the morning the monks did not stop praying. During the singing of the "Climbed Governor ..." they saw in the sky the Virgin Mary with a host of angels. Before the Queen of Heaven on his knees prayed Job Pochaev.

How Greek Catholics Believe in the Sanctity of the Monk

In 1713 the monastery came under the submission of the Greek Catholics, but even then the miracles from the relics of the saint did not cease. It is said that the Uniates believed in the righteousness of the monk, even made him a service and asked the Pope to rank the righteous Job and among the Catholic saints. But this did not happen: it was too painful for Job Pochaev to defend Orthodoxy and was against the union.

Light over the Pochaev Lavra

In 1831 the Pochaev monastery again returned to the Orthodox Church. The miraculous works of the Pochaev Icon and the relics of the Monks Job, and after centuries Amphilochius, do not cease.
