Veneration of the Holy Archangel Michael
Holy Archangel Michaelrefers to the highest angels who take the most significant part in the life of the Church. According to the Holy Scriptures, besides the physical life, there is an invisible spiritual world. It is inhabited by evil demons and reasonable good angels.
"Angel" in translation from Greek means "messenger". They are so called because the Lord communicates with people and transmits his will with the help of angels. We actually do not know the vital activity of the spiritual world, what it is, as it proceeds, it is not given to us.
Invisible space is different from our visible, and the existence in it occurs according to other laws. By the word "angel" attach the prefix "arch" in order to extolled and indicate the greater importance of the bright being before God in comparison with others.
Holy Archangel Michael bears the name, which in Hebrew sounds "who is like God." In the Holy Scripture are not the names of all the angels and archangels, but thosewho performed or perform an important mission.
Among the frequently mentioned in canonical books are the archangels Raphael, Uriel, Salafiel, Yehudiil, Barachiel. The Archangel Gabriel is often the herald of joyous events that are about to happen in the people of God.
There is a legend that the Archangel Raphael described himself as one of the seven angels, offering up the prayers of the saints. Based on this maxim, the Church concluded that there are only seven archangels. One of them is Michael.
St. Michael the Archangel in Scripture is called "the prince", "the leader of the host of the Lord." He is considered the main fighter against evil forces and lawlessness. Therefore, it is also called "the Archangel", which means "senior warrior or leader." Archangel Michael was a helper to Joshua when the Israelites conquered the Promised Land.
He was also the prophet Daniel when the fall of the Babylonian kingdom happened and the foundation of the Messianic kingdom was laid. In the Book of Revelation, the Archangel is presented as the leader in the war against the dragon-devil and other proud angels. Michael and the angels fought against the dragon, defeated Satan.
Fathers of the Church see the saint as a participant in other events in the life of the people. He is credited with turning into a pillar of fire, which arose and passed in the air over the Israelites during their flight from Egypt; this pillar destroyed the hordes of Pharaoh in the sea.
Holy Archangel Michaelrevered by the Church as a defender of the faith, a fighter against evil and heretical unrest. On the icons we can see Michael with a fiery sword in his hand or a spear, which he holds ready to defeat the devil.
In the 4th century, the Church established the feast of the “Council” (aggregate) of holy angels. Their head is Mikhail. The cathedral is celebrated on November 8th.
