How dangerous is bone marrow donation?
Transplanted bone marrow is able to restore the human immune system and kill cancer. Therefore, the demand for this donor material is very high. How to become a bone marrow donor, how dangerous it is and whether it is possible to make money on it, we will tell in our article.
When do you need a transplant?
Bone marrow looks like a sponge and is, as its name implies, inside human bones. It has a unique property - the ability to generate blood. Doctors call this phenomenon hemopoiesis, or hematopoiesis. In the body of an adult, it is the only tissue that contains a sufficient number of stem cells, whose structure is similar to embryonic.
We already wrote about the unique properties of stem cells in our article “Stem Cell Therapy”, and therefore we will not dwell on this point in detail. We only recall that this type of cells is a kind of "universal" and can give rise to any other kind of cellular material.
Bone marrow transplantation, in fact, is a transplant of hematopoietic stem cells from which blood is formed, from a healthy person to a patient suffering from oncological, autoimmune and genetic diseases.
Such a transplant is required for:
- acute myeloblastic and lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as chronic myeloid leukemia;
- juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia;
- myelodysplastic syndromes;
- malignant plasma cell diseases;
- Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.
In a similar way, non-malignant diseases are also treated, including congenital metabolic disorders and the immune system, HIV infection, aplastic anemia, systemic sclerosis, Crohn's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc.
Who can be a bone marrow donor?
Become a bone marrow donorany adult citizen who is under the age of 50, is not suffering from autoimmune and oncological diseases, is not infected with HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis B and C and has no nervous disorders.
What you need to do to become a bone marrow donor? First, you will have to go to the hospital, where they will tell you where the nearest department of the register of donors is.
Secondly, conclude an agreement on the entry of your data in the register and donate 9 ml of blood for the so-called “typing” - a procedure during which the main typical indicators of donor material are determined. On their basis, potential compatibility with the patient's body in need of transplantation is predicted in the future.
After that, you will only have to wait: if your leukocyte antigen (HLA-type) turns out to be compatible with some of the patients, you will be offered to go to the procedure of the fence.
100% compatibility of antigens is observed in identical twins, high compatibility - in siblings born from the same parents. All the others, including relatives, are less likely to match the HLA-type.
What is the procedure of donation and how dangerous is it?
The fence is made in two ways, the choice of each of which is determined not by the donor’s desire, but by medical indications:
- from the femoral or iliac pelvic bone. The intake is performed under general anesthesia using a special needle, which is inserted into the bone tissue. Syringe extracts up to 2000 ml of liquid.To get the right amount of material will have to do a few punctures.
This procedure lasts about 30 minutes and practically does not harm the donor, unless he is allergic to anesthesia or does not get an infection through a puncture. The body is fully restored after 1-1.5 months;
- from the blood. A week before the procedure, the donor begins receiving a medication that stimulates the release of stem cells into the blood. However, he may feel nausea, pain in muscles and joints, headache. After 7 days, the donor takes blood from one hand, using a special apparatus, stem cells are separated from it, after which the blood flows into the vein of the other hand.
Everything takes 5-6 hours, during which the donor must remain motionless. Recovery lasts up to 2 weeks.

Bone marrow donation in the Russian Federation and Ukraine is anonymous and gratuitous. thereforebecome a bone marrow donorand earn on their stem cells legally fail.
True, there is another way. Many parents of sick children are looking for donors on their own,placing ads in the media and promising rewards. You can use one of these offers and sell your stem cells, but this will be solely on your conscience.
