The Qumran scrolls, or scrolls of the Dead Sea, have long become a legend to archaeologists. These Hebrew and Aramaic documents, shedding light on the historical events of antiquity, were found as early as the 1940s in 11 caves of the Qumran Mountains. But, as it turned out, there was the twelfth cave. Her archaeologists found in the Judean mountains, and, in addition to the new scrolls, they were waited there for many amazing discoveries.

Excavations in the legendary Judean Hills allowed archeologists to discover another cave with the Dead Sea Scrolls. The cave contained many scrolls, as well as other ancient artifacts. This is the first such discovery in the last 60 years. The find disproved the theory among archaeologists that the Dead Sea Scrolls are stored exclusively in the caves of the Qumran Mountains, on the West Bank.

"Until today, everyone knew that the Dead Sea scrolls were found only in 11 caves, and all of them were located in the Qumran mountains. But now, without a doubt, we have discovered the twelfth cave, "says archaeologist Oren Gatfeld, one of the leading archaeologists of the project.

Already at the entrance to the cave, archaeologists discovered clay shards, broken jars in which were kept the scrolls, lids of jars and flint tools of the Neolithic era. After seeing the findings, archaeologists moved to explore the inside of the cave.

Having carefully excavated the floor of the cave with a small pickaxe, archaeologists discovered an incredible find - a whole jar with the scroll stored in it. They quickly brought him to the conservation laboratory of the Hebrew University, where the precious jar was provided with the best conditions for storage and work with it. Alas, as it turned out, there was no text on the scroll stored in it: it was prepared for the letter and sealed in a jug.

However, the efforts of archaeologists are not in vain. Having carefully studied the cave, they discovered an underground passage about 7 meters long in its depth. “We found a caches with three broken jars with manuscripts inside the tunnel. They had lids on them,” says Gatfeld. “In addition, we found fabric and leather straps that were used to wind the jugs.”Judging by the fact that pickaxes were thrown in the tunnel, archaeologists believe that in the 1950s, looters visited the cave. “I think they found the jugs and took the manuscripts,” says Gatfeld. “They probably opened the jars and threw everything here, except for the scrolls, actually.”

Archaeologists believe that the scrolls that were in the cave, hit the black market of antiques. According to Gatfeld, the discovery prompted the authorities and scientists to conduct research in all the caves of Qumran and in the Judean desert. According to Gatfeld, this is only the beginning: hundreds more caves were left unexamined.

“This is a big project, a complex operation,” the archeologist says. “We are optimistic about the future. Look, 60 years after the first discovery, we still discover new caves with artifacts that can shed light on the history of the Dead Sea Scrolls.”

As the Hebrew University in Jerusalem officially reported, the excavations are part of a large-scale “Operation Scroll.” It is a joint project of the university, the Israel Directorate of Antiquities, the Israel Directorate of Nature and Parks, and the civil administration of Judea and Samaria.
